What is Neuro-linguistic Programming and how can it Improve Your Life?

NLP is short for Neuro-Linguistic Programming the 'Neuro' acknowledges the fact that we process information about the world neurologically, using the brain and the nervous system, through our five senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. NLP is not really a thing as much as it is a collection of beliefs, and the processes and products of that collection of beliefs. It is a modeling process and although self-improvement books and tapes are great, someone who has studied NLP can probably benefit even more than someone who has never experienced the training. Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the gathering of information to make models, based on the internal experience and information processing of the people being studied and modeled, including the part that is outside of their conscious awareness.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a method, a set of techniques, or personal development system first developed in the early 1970s by Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder in association with Gregory Bateson. Techniques taught might include things such as how to communicate more clearly with other people, how to gain a better understanding into people’s motivations, and how to change some key aspect of one's own personality. By changing ones outlook, using a variety of techniques, a person can improve their attitudes and actions. NLP embodies many techniques, including hypnotic techniques, which proponents claim can affect changes in the way people think, learn and communicate. In 2005, celebrity hypnotist and television personality Paul McKenna was shown applying neuro-linguistic programming and other techniques on his Sky One show, 'I Can Change Your Life' to assist people with phobias, such as agoraphobia and addictions to gambling and shopping. In 2006, another Sky One program, 'I Can Make You Thin', featured Richard Bandler and used NLP among other techniques to help people lose weight. Cases such as Attention Deficiency Disorder (ADD), Learning Deficiency (LD), hyper active children and the like can be relieved by use of NLP techniques. People who are in creative fields such as writing, acting and the like can be helped to improve their creative ability through NLP techniques. In other words, NLP techniques add choice back to your life… You'd like to be the author of your own life, wouldn't you?

Modeling is the core function of NLP. Learning to model (self and others) is the core activity of NLP practitioners and NLP master practitioner certification trainings. Modeling is the key to creating an innovative and unique approach to business and life, enabling you to consistently achieve the results you want. In its simplest form Modeling involves copying a set of behaviors, beliefs and values from a ‘model’ of excellence, installing it within another person who then replicates and achieves the same outcome. Modeling is being able to extrapolate what someone does well and strip away the rest. It’s a way of learning in which we attempt to duplicate another person's results by duplicating their mental and physical behaviors. Modeling skills, based on detailed observations and careful questions around beliefs and values, are the key to competence in NLP. Learning the specific components of how others do something well will provide you with new options and accelerated learning.

NLP is controversial, particularly for use in therapy and, after more than three decades of existence, has not been validated in terms of psychological science. Neuro Linguistic Programming is a rather cumbersome name for an approach which is straightforward: The “neuro” referring to our neurological processes (how we take information in though our senses, the thoughts involved and the feelings) the “linguistic” to the language we use to consciously think with, to communicate with, “programming” to ways that we can choose to behave. Developed in the USA it has mainly been used to improve people’s perceptions of themselves thereby allowing them to ‘fulfill their natural potential’.
